Tech Support

I never thought I would be in tech support but I really enjoy my new job. I not only survived working on the hospital floor without fainting from the sight of blood (even working on the Intensive care units) but I got to help a lot of people. As I wrote in my previous post, my job entails helping hospital staff use a new computerized medical records software. The new system went live last month and it's gone fairly well. So well in fact that after only two weeks, they no longer need us to there on the hospital floor. So, my new job is doing Epic support over the phone from our downtown IT office. I didn't think I would enjoy talking to people on the phone all day, but it's been fun so far because when the phone rings, you have NO idea what the caller's needs will be. It's kind of adventurous and exciting. Today, someone called to ask if the issue she reported weeks ago has been resolved yet. I looked it up and saw that it wasn't resolved. I could have just told her no and that I would report it again, but I asked what the issue was and how she was going about doing her job without this issue being resolved. That ended up in a very long conversation where I helped her create a different way of using Epic to help do her job more efficiently and increasing her communication with her coworkers. My team made fun of me because I was on the phone for so long with the one caller. I think I have a hard time keeping it short because I have a lot of empathy for the folks who are having trouble learning the new software. I also love to solve problem and be more efficient. This job really taps into that. The only problem is that I have to work Saturdays. Otherwise it's the perfect schedule. Wed-Sat 9am -7:30 pm and have 3 days off in a row. So, I can't go hiking on Sat afternoons but please inviting me to any fun parties you might be having in the evening. :)
